There are three types of software:-
- System Software
- Application Software
- Utility Software (most of the people include this as a sub-category of application software)
By my common sense (which is not so common) I assume that you are asking about application softwares.
System software:-
system software is software designed to provide a platform for other software. Examples of system software include operating systems like macOS, GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows, computational science software, game engines, industrial automation, and software as a service applications.
Application Software:-
Application software is a collection of one or more programs used to solve a specific task.
Generally software used in banking industry, airline/railway reservation, generation of telephone or electricity bills etc. all fall under application software.
Few examples of application software are:
- Word processing software
- Spreadsheet software
- Database software
- Education software
- Entertainment software
- A software which greets you “Good day” on starting it.
Utility software:-
System utility software improves the function of computer infrastructure to help users perform multiple tasks efficiently. Some of the functions performed by various utility software include data compression, data recovery, disk defragmentation, computer resources and files management, system diagnosis, and more
